Insights from University of Arizona’s Erin Riesgo

In our latest Credentials Chat for AACRAO’s Digital Credentials community of practice, we had the pleasure of diving into the dynamic world of micro-credentials with Erin Riesgo from the University of Arizona. The journey she’s leading at UofA is nothing short of a masterclass in change management for innovating credentialing processes.

Erin’s story at UofA began with addressing a hodgepodge of micro-credentialing practices. She encountered a mix of approaches, with some departments like the Graduate College having established protocols, while others had none. The challenge? To bring coherence and structure to this decentralized system.

Instead of dictating solutions, she asked questions, listened, and then crafted a strategy that resonated with the needs and visions of different stakeholders.

Erin’s solution was a comprehensive overhaul. Under Erin’s leadership, UofA has developed a full taxonomy for badges, a credential review committee, and a unified proposal process encompassing all educational levels. This revamp has culminated in a centralized website, providing clear, structured information on micro-credentials at UofA.

Talk about going from chaos to clarity!

Erin’s secret sauce is a mix of thorough research, engaging with diverse university departments, and a curious, empathetic approach. Instead of dictating solutions, she asked questions, listened, and then crafted a strategy that resonated with the needs and visions of different stakeholders. This collaborative, research-driven approach, combined with her change management expertise from her business background, has been a game changer.

A crucial takeaway from Erin’s story is the significance of housing micro-credentialing within the Office of the Registrar. This strategic move, supported by the proactive Registrar and executive level sponsors at UofA, ensures accountability and paves the way for potential accreditation of these credentials in the future.

Erin’s journey is a testament to the power of leadership, stakeholder engagement, and strategic planning in the realm of micro-credentials. Her approach of starting with stakeholder needs, blending it with best practices, and aligning with the university’s vision is a blueprint for success.
